ST Maharjan Jewels: Building Purpose Through Craftsmanship
Founded in 2020 by Suprima Maharjan in Patan, Lalitpur, ST Maharjan Jewels is a handmade jewelry enterprise that combines traditional Nepali craftsmanship with contemporary design while creating meaningful livelihood opportunities for local artisans. Named after her parents — Surjaman and Tari — the enterprise reflects the values of family, creativity, resilience, and social responsibility that continue to shape its growth.
Suprima's entrepreneurial journey began unexpectedly. After returning to Nepal from Australia during the COVID-19 pandemic, she sought to create something meaningful but had no defined business plan. What started as a small experiment with a handful of handcrafted jewelry pieces gradually evolved into a purpose-driven enterprise. Beginning with local farmers' markets and learning directly from customer feedback, she steadily refined her products before establishing her own studio in Patan. Her journey demonstrates that entrepreneurship often emerges through persistence, learning, and action rather than certainty.
Growing up around her father's handmade accessories business, Suprima developed a deep appreciation for craftsmanship from an early age. Recognizing both the exceptional skills of Nepali artisans and the limited market opportunities available to many of them, she built ST Maharjan Jewels to bridge this gap. The enterprise preserves traditional handmade techniques while creating modern designs that appeal to today's consumers, generating value for both artisans and customers seeking authentic, locally crafted products.
Beyond producing handcrafted jewelry, the enterprise has generated tangible social impact. During the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic, ST Maharjan Jewels created employment opportunities for five to six local artisans and two to three customer service representatives, providing stable income when employment opportunities were scarce. This experience reinforced Suprima's belief that entrepreneurship should not only generate profit but also improve lives through dignified employment and economic inclusion.
Like many first-generation entrepreneurs, Suprima encountered significant challenges while building the business. As a young woman leading a manufacturing enterprise, earning the trust of artisans and suppliers required persistence and resilience. One particularly difficult experience occurred when an artisan became unreachable just before an important customer delivery. Rather than allowing the setback to derail the business, she communicated transparently with the client, resolved the issue professionally, and used the experience to strengthen her operational systems.
The unwavering support of Suprima's family played an equally important role in the enterprise's growth. From introducing skilled artisans to supporting market participation and encouraging her during periods of uncertainty, her parents helped build the confidence needed to transform an idea into a sustainable business. Today, ST Maharjan Jewels has established a growing customer base, expanded its retail collaborations across Nepal, and continues to strengthen its market presence through exhibitions, partnerships, and product innovation.
The enterprise's commitment to impact extends beyond employment generation. Through regular contributions to orphanages, elderly care homes, and disaster-affected communities — including relief initiatives implemented in partnership with Hami Nepal Organisation — ST Maharjan Jewels demonstrates that businesses can serve as active contributors to community well-being while remaining commercially sustainable.
Participation in the Nabil School of Social Entrepreneurship (Nabil SSE) marked an important turning point in Suprima's entrepreneurial journey. As the business entered a growth phase, the fellowship strengthened her strategic thinking, enhanced her business planning capabilities, and reinforced the importance of building systems for long-term sustainability. The mentorship, practical learning, and peer network enabled her to shift from managing daily operations to building an enterprise capable of generating sustained economic and social impact.
Today, ST Maharjan Jewels continues to expand through new product collections, stronger retail partnerships, and increasing brand recognition across Nepal. Looking ahead, Suprima envisions transforming the enterprise into an internationally recognized handmade jewelry brand that celebrates Nepali craftsmanship, creates sustainable employment for artisans, and demonstrates that locally built social enterprises can successfully compete in global markets.
Suprima's journey illustrates how purpose-driven entrepreneurship can preserve cultural heritage, create dignified livelihoods, and inspire inclusive economic growth. Her story stands as a testament to the transformative power of resilience, continuous learning, and social entrepreneurship in building enterprises that create lasting impact.
