"Every handcrafted piece carries the story of our artisans, our heritage, and the beauty of being imperfectly perfect."

Preserving a Legacy through Entrepreneurship

Siddhartha Shakya, Founder of Maa:Yu Creative CreationAfter spending more than sixteen years in Nepal's private sector, Siddhartha Shakya reached a turning point that transformed his professional journey. Inspired by his mother's lifelong dedication to traditional handicrafts and motivated by her illness, he chose not only to continue a family legacy but also to preserve a traditional art form that is gradually disappearing.

In 2019, he established Maa:Yu Creative Creation with a vision of reviving Nepal's traditional block-printing heritage while creating contemporary handcrafted products for modern domestic and international markets. More than a commercial enterprise, Maa:Yu represents a commitment to protecting indigenous craftsmanship and ensuring that generations of artisan knowledge continue to thrive.

The Nabil SSE Journey

While Siddhartha possessed strong technical knowledge of traditional handicrafts and a clear entrepreneurial vision, he recognised the need to strengthen his business management skills to transform his passion into a sustainable enterprise. Participation in the Nabil SSE Certificate Course equipped him with practical knowledge in business planning, marketing, financial management, and enterprise development. Through experiential learning, mentorship, and interaction with fellow entrepreneurs, he strengthened his confidence to position traditional craftsmanship as a competitive creative enterprise capable of serving both local and international markets.

The programme reinforced his belief that entrepreneurship can simultaneously preserve culture, generate livelihoods, and build commercially sustainable businesses.

Creating Sustainable Livelihoods through Heritage

By integrating traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, the enterprise creates sustainable livelihood opportunities while helping preserve valuable cultural skills that are increasingly at risk of disappearing.

The company currently provides direct employment to two professionals, while supporting a broader artisan value chain that benefits dozens of skilled craftspeople across Nepal.

Guided by its philosophy of "Imperfectly Perfect Art," Maa:Yu celebrates the individuality of handmade products, recognising that every handcrafted piece reflects the creativity, authenticity, and cultural identity of its maker.

Taking Nepal's Craftsmanship to the World

Its handcrafted products are now exported to the United States, France, Germany, and Japan, introducing Nepal's rich artistic heritage to global markets while creating new economic opportunities for local artisans. Despite the significant challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, including disruptions to production and market access, the enterprise demonstrated remarkable resilience by rebuilding operations, strengthening product development, and expanding its international presence.

Today, Maa:Yu continues to prove that traditional craftsmanship can remain commercially viable while contributing to Nepal's creative economy and cultural preservation.

Looking Ahead

Siddhartha envisions Maa:Yu Creative Creation becoming a leading platform for preserving Nepal's traditional textile and block-printing heritage while expanding opportunities for artisan communities nationwide. Through stronger international market access, sustainable production practices, and the engagement of younger generations in traditional craftsmanship, the enterprise aims to ensure that Nepal's artistic legacy continues to flourish for years to come.
